Do you coach only people pursuing specific degrees?
I provide success coaching to graduate students pursuing any degree. I can support you in the areas of goal setting, motivation, time management, project planning for a thesis, dissertation, or capstone, academic reading and writing, library research, communicating with professors and advisors, conference proposals and other, similar areas. If you are pursuing a graduate degree in education, we may have more similar research interests. However, my ability to support your success is not dependent on your field of study. If you have any questions about what help I can provide, schedule a free consultation. We’ll discuss your needs and see if my success coaching will be a good fit.
Do you coach undergraduate students?
I can coach undergraduate students and, in some cases, high school students. You can find details on the Resources for High School and College Students page.
What kind of help can you provide for a thesis/dissertation/capstone project?
I can help you identify milestones and create a project management plan to complete your thesis/dissertation/capstone project. Additionally, I can provide guidance for conducting and writing a literature review. Depending on the area of your project, I may be able to talk through study design and research methods with you; my background is in qualitative case study, interview research, and thematic analysis. I can help you think through questions to ask your advisor and discuss how to relate to advisors and committee members, if you are dealing with those issues. If you have something specific you need help with, please schedule a free consultation, and we can talk about whether I am the best resource for you.
Do you work with neurodiverse students?
I do not have special training in working with students who have learning differences; however, I would love to chat about your needs and see if I am able to be helpful. Schedule a free consultation and let’s talk!
I am feeling depressed/anxious – will coaching help?
If your feelings are rooted in (or exacerbated by) issues with time management, organization, or academics, or if you just need someone to provide encouragement and accountability, I can probably help. I am not a therapist, though, so if you need specialized counseling for emotional or psychological issues, you will benefit more from someone with professional training in that area. In our initial free consultation, we can talk about what’s going on and how coaching might benefit you. If, at any time, I think a counselor might be a better fit, I will let you know.
How many times can I email after a session or between sessions?
That depends on the nature of your email and the length of time for me to deal with the questions or issue. There is no limit on brief emails giving me an update, letting me know relevant information for the next session, or asking a quick scheduling question. Longer, more involved emails that require detailed responses should be kept to a minimum, but one or two are fine! If questions are better discussed live, I may suggest you schedule an additional session.
Do you review, proofread, or edit papers?
I can review a short document (1-2 pages) in preparation for discussing it in a session. We can also use a session to discuss topics such as a thesis or organization of a paper, if it does not require more than 1-2 pages of pre-work on my part. I do have experience as a professional editor, so if you want proofreading, editing, and formatting help, we can discuss availability and pricing for that separately. If I cannot give you the help you need, I can also suggest other academic editors.
As a former composition teacher, I am committed to academic honesty. Any help I provide is done in that context, ensuring that your work is yours alone.
What if I can’t find a time in your schedule that works for me?
If you can’t find a good time in my schedule for your initial consultation, just send me an email ([email protected]) with your availability, and we will make something work! I am in the Eastern time zone in the U.S., but I am happy to adjust my schedule to accommodate people in different time zones.
